How to Get an SSL Certificate

Here's the step-by-step guide to getting your site SSL-encrypted

Getting your site secured with an SSL certificate is easier said than done. However, with the right preparation and proper knowledge, it can become as easy as pie. The entire process starts with CSR generation and ends with SSL installation. Let's have a look at the things you'll need and the steps you'll need to perform.

What You'll Need

  • A Unique IP address (not necessary but recommended)
  • A Certificate Signing Request (CSR)
  • Correct information in WHOIS database
  • Legal documents vouching for your organization's legitimacy (for high assurance certificates)

Steps Involved in Getting an SSL Certificate

Choose the right SSL certificate for your site

SSL certificates come in different shapes and sizes. That's why choosing the right SSL is the first and the most crucial step. One might want to encrypt his/her site using a basic DV SSL, or one might want to secure a hundred websites using a single certificate-it all depends on your requirements. If you still haven't been able to figure out the right SSL certificate for your site, here's the guide that will help you out.

Generate CSR

A CSR (certificate signing request) is a lot like an application form to get an SSL certificate. You need to fill in all your information correctly so that the CA can verify your details and issue SSL certificate promptly. Note that the CSR generation process may differ from one server to another. Here's our comprehensive CSR generation guide that includes CSR generation processes for all major servers.

Finish the Order Process

Once you've chosen the certificate and generated CSR, you should proceed to complete the order process. Your CA will send you an order confirmation email once you've completed the order. It will consist of a configuration link. You should click on the link and submit your CSR there.

Complete the Vetting Process

After the CA receives your order, it reviews your certificate and conducts a vetting process. The intensity of validation depends upon the type of certificate you purchase.

Installation

After you've successfully gone through the authentication process, the CA will send your certificate files via email. You must download them and follow up with its installation based on your server. Note that the installation process depends on your server. Here's our comprehensive SSL installation guide that includes SSL installation processes for all major servers.

"Very fast delivery. Installation was easy with no problems. If you are installing a wildcard SSL certificate on cPanel, you need to specify the actual domain name, don't try to install it on *.domain.com , you have to install it on each subdomain such as admin.domain.com, shop.domain.com,..etc. Use the same certificate for each subdomain you install. Good luck!"
